登山ルート

Joju Route (Ropeway)

Time to summit: 2.5-3 hours
Distance 3.6 km
The trailhead is at the Joju-sha Shrine (1,450 m). This trail is shorter in distance than the Tsuchigoya route but features many steep ascents.

Ishizuchi Tozan Ropeway

Ishizuchi Shrine Joju-sha Shrine 
 (20 minutes on foot from the upper ropeway station. Official name: Sancho-Joju Station)

After arriving at the upper ropeway station, it is a 20 minute walk to the Joju-sha, a mountainside shrine that is a part of Ishizuchi Shrine. The north face of Tengu-dake peak (the summit of Mt. Ishizuchi) is visible through a viewing window inside the shrine.

Yohaijo (1 hour from the upper ropeway station)

遥拝所

Practitioners of mountain worship who are unable to climb to the summit come to this torii gate to pray. Ahead is the Hachozaka-goya hut. (Distance from Joju-sha Shrine to this point: 1,000 m)
It is another 800 m from this point to the Zenjagamori-goya rest hut, which lies just past the trial chain. The strenuous trail winds up steep hills through old-growth forest.

Yoakashi-toge pass (2 hours from the upper ropeway station)

夜明峠

The name of this pass means "staying up through the night." Before reliable trails made it easier to climb the mountain, climbers would pass the night here before attempting the summit.

Hikers not wishing to challenge the chains may use trails to bypass them.

Ishizuchi Shrine Sancho-sha Shrine (3 hours from the upper ropeway station)

The distance from Joju-sha to the Sancho-sha (a shrine on the summit of Mt Ishizuchi) is 3.6 km. The ascent takes 2.5-3 hours and the descent takes 2-2.5 hours.
There are about 1,200 species of plants, including many rare alpine plants and flowers, and several species endemic to Mt. Ishizuchi. Take your time while climbing so you can enjoy the wonders of the great outdoors.

Tsuchigoya Route

Time to summit: 2-2.5 hours
Distance 4.6 km
The trailhead is at Tsuchigoya (1,492 m).
The trail follows a mountain ridge and is less strenuous than the Joju (Ropeway) trail.

Ishizuchi Skyline

石鎚スカイライン
 A part of Prefectural Route 12, this mountain road stretches 18 km (approx. a 30 min. drive) from the Omogo Gorge entrance up to Tsuchigoya with an elevation change of 800 m. A two-lane road, the Ishizuchi Skyline is scenic and comparatively easy to drive.
*The road is closed from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. (subject to change depending on season) and from December to March.

Tsuchigoya

At the end of the Ishizuchi Skyline road is the Tsuchigoya trailhead.
This trailhead has a small restaurant, store and lodging facilities. It gets lively during climbing season.
The Yohai-den, a mountain shrine that is part of Ishizuchi Shrine, is also located at Tsuchigoya.

Tsuchigoya Trail

With less elevation change than the Joju route, the Tsuchigoya route is a comparatively easy trail.
After passing the rest area at Goyomatsu, the trail climbs through beautiful fields of bamboo grass and bare white trees.
It is 4.6 km from the Tsuchigoya trailhead to the summit of Mt. Ishizuchi. It takes 2-2.5 hours to climb and 1.5-2 hours to descend.

 

Chains

Mt. Ishizuchi is famous for its four climbing chains (a trial chain and the first, second, and third chains). Hikers coming from Tsuchigoya can climb the second (65 m) and third chains (68 m).
(The Joju and Tsuchigoya routes merge at the second chain.)
Hikers not wishing to climb the chains can use an alternate trail to bypass them.
