Saijo Domain Encampment ruins ■Saijo Domain Encampment ruins

The Hitotsuyanagi family was appointed as the feudal lords of the Saijo region in 1636 (during the Edo period) and the second lord Naoshige founded the encampment site , which became the foundation of Saijo town around the castle. Later in 1670, Yorizumi Matsudaira (Grand son of Ieyasu Tokugawa) became the feudal lord of the town, which prospered as the capital town of the Daimyo's fief of 30,000 Goku (rice) for around 200 years. The city has many ancient sounding names for the areas and its streets as well as the old Otemon gate at Jinya (encampment) ruins. These factors as well as many others allow you to feel the atmosphere of the old times.

The Saijo Domain prospered as a castle town under the rule of the Matsudairas. A high school is now built over the old feudal encampment. A part of Koshimaki Dorui (earthwork) remains to this day on both sides of this gate. The north gate was removed from the original site and has been reconstructedon the right hand side of this gate.

Tokuzan Kondo devoted himself as a scholar of the Chinese classics, and to the education between a pupil ane his master within the Komatsu feudal clans.
