Registration application

A foreigner living in Japan shall register his/her name, date of birth and other information with the local municipality of his residence.

Those who are 16 years of age or older must apply in person.

For those who are under 16 years old, adult family members living together must apply on their behalf.

New registration

A foreigner who is born in Japan must make an application within 60 days of his/her birth, accompanied by a birth certificate.

A foreigner who is born in Japan as a child of a special permanent residency status, may apply for a special permanent residency permit within 60 days of his/her birth.

A foreigner entering Japan must apply for the registration within 90 days of his/her arrival (Passport and two photographs are required).

A person who has relinquished their Japanese citizenship must make an application, accompanied by a certificate proving the fact.
